This painting was inspired by a scene from the wonderful film, A Hidden Life. Bruno Ganz plays Judge Lueben. I focused on his expression, the lighting, and the atmosphere of the scene. I obscured his eyes to reflect his inner conflict—his silent struggle between recognizing the injustice and choosing to remain distant from its consequences. Blurring his eyes also creates a sense of detachment for the viewer, just as he kept himself distant from the weight of his decision.
