"Cascade Serenity", 2024

Watercolour on Canvas board

42 x 59.4 cm

I painted ‘Cascade Serenity’ as part of my water series. It explores the concept of water as a medium to either drown you, sustain you, wash you clean and many other things.

The water in  Cascade Serenity' is in reference to a waterfall on a property I grew up on in South Africa. When friends visit for the first time, I would hide behind the waterfall while they are swimming below. I would then emerge, as if from behind a curtain, like a water spirit, while litres upon litres of algae-rich water pounded on my head, leading to my final dive through the watery curtain into stillness.

This waterfall was used as part of police training in South Africa in 1980s and early 90s.

This piece is therefore called Cascade Serenity.
